Peachy AND Pretty AND Magical

Christian's 7th birthday and church funday 2009 002

Last weekend we celebrated my oldest grandson’s seventh birthday.  And while we adults enjoy a themed cake as much as the next person….

I wasn’t sure it was going to feed all 12?  (I lost track) little boys plus the adults.  Don’t mind the bottom left corner that looks like the baby sat on it.  And yes, it was a box mix.  If it helps, I made real, honest to goodness butter cream frosting that was finger lickin’ good.  Believe me, I tasted plenty of it!

There was actually a magician who came to the party and did some tricks that amazed this group of young boys.  I’ve never seen little boys so quiet ~~ at least while this nice man was performing!

Here’s a shot of the cake before candles.  I think you can see the little hat better here.  The magic wand held a lighted feature just for effect.

This should have been a very simple cake, but yet I had the hardest time with this.  I couldn’t find any great ideas by googling that didn’t have a rabbit coming out of a hat.  That reminded me too much of Easter and I didn’t like the idea of black frosting.  So, I did the best I could which turned out to be just okay.

Remember last week I told you I purchased a lug of Colorado peaches?  I decided to make a Peach Pound Cake for the adults and it is quite yummy.

~~~~~~~~~
Fresh Peach Pound Cake
1 cup plus 2 T. butter, softened
2 1/4 c. sugar
4 eggs
1/2 t. vanilla
1/2 t. lemon flavoring
1/4 t. almond flavoring
3 cups all purpose flour, divided
1 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt
2 cups chopped fresh peaches
1/4 t. cinnamon
1/4 t. nutmeg
dash ginger
*Grease tube pan with 2 T. butter
*Sprinkle pan with 1/4 cup sugar
*Cream remaining butter and gradually add remaining sugar; beat well
*Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each
*Add flavorings and mix well
*Combine 2 3/4 cups flour, baking powder and salt
*Gradually add to creamed mixture, beating until well blended
*Dredge peaches with remaining 1/4 c. flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger; fold into batter
*Pour into prepared pan and bake at 325* for 1 hour and 10 minutes
*Remove immediately from pan and cool completely
Just because it looks so pretty, I dusted the cooled cake with powdered sugar.  I filled the center opening with gorgeous nasturtiums and chocolate mint sprigs from my garden.  The nasturtiums are edible, you know….however I couldn’t get anyone to try them.  Oh, as I was walking by the delphinium, I snatched a pretty piece of blue for contrast.  Isn’t it striking?
Your grandson's cake is perfect for the "magical" theme and I thank you for the peach cake recipe. Love your addition of fresh flowers and herbs to the center of the cake.
What a good grandmother you are! The "Magic" cake is darling box mix or not! The grownup peach cake looks and sounds divine. For some reason peaches have not been very flavorful or plentiful in my neck of the woods this year. I wonder how it would be with frozen peaches. Great bundt pan--love the shape!
Fun party and I had to laugh when you said you tasted lots of frosting:) My finger always dips into the frosting bowl a few times too. Your peach cake sounds wonderful and I have copied the recipe. I love your bundt pan and I like to bake in different shapes as they are always so pretty in presentation. I usually participate in FF but have been babysitting a 2 yr old all week so there was no way I could post another recipe besides the one I posted on Monday.
The boys look like they were having a wonderful time and the birthday cake was perfect for that age group. I must say, however, it was your peach cake that captured my eye. It looks beautiful and I'm sure it tastes every bit as good as it looks. I hope you have a wonderful day.
