Our garden produce is just starting to come in now. I always have a big smile when Mr. Brown Socks brings in the first cucumbers and squash. We could make an entire meal on nothing but garden produce in the summertime.
One of our family favorite summer recipes is Creamy Cucumbers.
We start with these purdy gems ~~~~~
Then let’s pick a little dill and snip some chives while we’re out here.
Can’t you just smell it? Fresh dill will always, always remember me of my dear father in law. He always had dill in his garden. I used to walk out as he would proudly show me how his garden was coming along, and pull off some dill as he was talking. Dill and summer and my father in law just go hand in hand to me. LOVE IT and the memories!
Now let’s slice up several of these cukes. We are having a few extra family members for this meal, so I will triple this recipe. Rarely are there leftovers, but if there ever are, this recipe will keep fine for lunch the next day.
Now I have all the ingredients sitting out, ready to put the whole thing together.
Sorry the picture is a little pale, but hopefully you can see the completed, savory bowl of yumminess at it’s best.
Creamy Cucumbers
Thinly slice 1 cucumber; sprinkle with 1 tsp. salt; let stand 30 minutes. Drain. You may want to rinse a bit too if you don’t like a lot of saltiness.
Combine 1/2 cup sour cream, 4 tsps. vinegar, 2-3 drops (or more to suit your taste) bottled hot pepper sauce, 2 T. snipped chives, 1/2 tsp. dried dillweed or about a tablespoon fresh dill, and dash pepper; pour over cucumbers.
Chill about 30 minutes.
Makes 3-4 servings.
*Note ~~ I always double or triple this. It’s that good!
I’m also joining in with Tootsie for Flaunt your Flowers. While I’m showing a few of my flowers, I want to ask your opinion on what went on up on my deck recently. Our lot does back up to the woods, but we have a fence between the yard/garden and woods.
I went outside and saw all these buds from my geranium. At first I didn’t think anything of it, but as I looked around, I noticed more and more and more. I was so sad because you can see by all the buds, this plant was ready to burst open with color.
Totally puzzled, I called Mr. Brown Socks to take a look and he couldn’t figure it out either.
See all the stubs? The leaves were left alone, just the buds were missing…..
If it had been a wild critter, he could have chosen anything from the garden, down below, as we have walkout basement floor plan so our deck is really up high.
He could have feasted on lettuce, green beans, winter squash greens and numerous other goodies.

But do you think he would really have climbed the steps all the way up to feast on geranium buds??
Could it have been this big lug of a family member? We don’t think so, BUT?
I don’t suppose we will ever know, but it is a mystery.

The mystery? Wonder if it will ever be solved? Very strange indeed.
Your recipe for creamed cucumber has my mouth watering. I made up a batch this morning. Your vegetable and other flowers are beautiful. As to the little delinquent... we put up a motion camera to discover the deer eating the hostas. We weren't sure if it was deer or rabbit. Caught the beautiful creatures with a snap shot. We've since used a product called 'deer repel' it repels deer and rabbits. My hostas are now getting a chance to grow.
Hi Donna, thanks for your visit the other day! Fresh cucumbers...yum! We are going to the local farmer's market tomorrow and I'm hoping to find lots home grown veggies. My mom brought me some home grown tomatoes yesterday. I love them with a little salt.
I wonder what got a hold of your geranium. That is soooo wierd! I bet it was the dog...he looks sneaky! lol... Have a great weekend! Kristen

That is a mystery about the flower buds; the big lug family member (as you called him) looks a little guilty of something!!! ha ha

What a BUMMER! Are you planting seed geraniums or are these from cutting? Usually, seed geraniums take soooo long to bloom. I always suggest to customers to skip the seed ones and go with cutting varieties since they bloom all season......no waiting :) Can you tell that our season is very short?!
This looks like the kind of damage a deer would do. It's a shame! Your recipe for cucumbers sounds wonderful. Thanks for sharing it with us.

What a wonderful garden!!! I wish we had one as bountiful as yours. I only had a chance to plant some thyme and three tomato plants this year, but they are really coming in. :)
Beautiful garden produce and flowers. WE have mystery creatures as well...nutria, raccoon, groundhogs, chipmunks, squirrels...I never know to expect to see or what will be eaten. We haven't had deer in some time as our area had built up in the past few years. Your flowers are gorgeous, and of course your furry friend couldn't be the culprit, just look in those innocent eyes!!!! Your cucumber recipe looks yummy...

I have no idea what could have happened to your geranium - that's too bad. Your nasturtium looks great though - do you ever eat the leaves or do you use it purely for decorative purposes?
what a crime!!! Geraniums have that scent to them that most animals don't really like too! I hope you solve this mystery...I am afraid I am of no help...thanks for linking in...and just know I will be thinking about this!!! I think I would be MAD!!!

I'm wondering if a deer got to your geraniums too. I hear so many horror stories about deer and plants. The only thing is, I would have expected them to eat the whole plant and several of your other plants. I would have been crushed to have this happen. When I'm cleaning up a daylily and accidentally snap a bud that hasn't opened I want to cry. LOL!
And those creamy cucumbers!! Yummy!! I must try that.
I, also, think of my father and cucumbers. He made them every night just about this same way but without the sour cream. I had not remembered this for a long time and your post brought back those dear memories. Thank you. As to the geraniums, it sounds like deer, but since it was on the second floor I'd go with a smaller animal like a squirrel or raccoon. Good luck resolving this mystery.

And as far as the geraniums are concerned... is that a Min Pin's legs I spy on the back of your bird dog??? I had two of those little ones, and they ate EVERYTHING in sight. I wouldn't put it past a Min Pin to gobble up geraniums. Aren't geraniums edible??? Mine ate everything and even ate a bottle of herbs in the back seat of the car that had a child proof lid. One of mine was like Houdini, and in addition to being an escape artist, could open and do anything with her teeth. LOL! So, before you go blaming the big guy, if that is indeed a Min Pin, you might not need to look any further for your culprit! Mine even ate rocks and a plastic Daisy razor (and my husban'd Track II) one of which she stole from the seat of my shower and the other from his zippered gym bag... she would eat the plastic and remove the blades which still sent me flying with her to the vet... oh, and a piece of twine that cost her a vet stay! ;-) One day I came home, and she was wearing my lipstick. Somehow it had rolled off the counter... my guess is she was jumping against it, and not only was she covered with lipstick, but so were my bathroom cabinets! LOL! It got to the point, we had to crate them when we left the house in fear of not having a house when we returned!

Dona, Cucumbers are a favorite around here, so I'll be trying this recipe. That dog couldn't do anything wrong! Just look at that sweet face. Your flowers are so pretty. I hope you can keep the critters away from them in the future. laurie
